When asked what i've been painting the past several months, I replied, "I have been painting nothing. My containers are empty."
This statement is not entirely true. These generic forms hold my attention. As I observe common objects through painting, they begin to transcend their function. They provoke memories and experiences. The object itself becomes a symbol of human existence, and the paint helps preserve the moment, idea, or emotion.
A container is often a description or preface to other objects - a bag of... a jar full of... a bottle of... Rarely do we focus on the simple container itself. It's that within that usually concerns us, and if the contents are hidden from us, it becomes mysterious and open to speculation. If it's empty, the meaning of the container changes. It becomes and invention to hold a denial, an absence, or it's own potential. As an object or tool, it's importance seems to rest solely on its user. As a symbol, I believe it caries much more.
