Trish Grantham's explorative multi-media
paintings are akin to observing international
pop-culture references evolving and procreating
through the lens of a ViewMaster. Boldly rendered
anime-inspired characters mingle in dreamy washes
of color, scrawled text, and textured thematic
worlds. Untold stories emerge as vividly as the
imagination of the viewer can keep up.
Grantham's works come to life on
a number of levels, most notably via her employment
of an invented cast of elusively complex characters.
Her compositions convey sincerity and reflection,
hinting at the fragility of human emotion, but
without belittling individual experience or projecting
assumptions.
A self-taught painter, Grantham
has quickly made a name for herself. Interesting
to note, she began painting only six years ago
and sold several pieces after working in the medium
for a mere four months. Her work has been featured
in several West Coast galleries from Seattle to
San Diego, and her clients include Seattle's The
Stranger newspaper as well as the School of Visual
Art in New York. "The discovery of personal
expression through art has been a huge force in
my recent life," explains Grantham, "I
managed to find it almost completely by accident."
