Born in Communist East Germany and raised
behind the Iron Curtain, Tom Luedecke’s childhood
included four years in Moscow in the era of Gorbachev.
Raised in a now extinct culture, he watched its gradual
evaporation in the hearts and minds of its people and
turned to philosophy to remedy his anger and sadness.
Luedecke’s adaptation to Capitalist society has
ultimately been eased by immersing himself in it, living
in the US for seven years now. However the “fall
of the wall” influences his thoughts and feelings
to this day.
Through his work as a designer –
notably, as part of the “Innovation Kitchen”
- Luedecke is exposed to new technologies all the time.
His aesthetic sensibilities have been influenced by
graffiti artists MazeOne, Giant, and Banksy, as well
as the artists Gerhard Richter and Caspar David Friedrich.
The WiseCrack series attempts to provoke thought in
its audience by presenting traditional portraits using
contemporary design techniques.
“Art is just another language.
And artists use it to express themselves, which - I
believe – is a monologue of personal history communicated
through individual technique. If ‘language remains
the master of man’ (Heidegger) I want to use this
tongue to speak about the important evolution of human
thought through the minds of many thinkers. How surprisingly
their words mark our lives today. And, in turn, how
easy it sometimes is to hear some historic wisecrack
... and then listen again ... and then think...”
