L. Jason Mitchell
Ideas are exchanged within society through a plethora
of media channels and forms of communication. While
channels change and evolve the basics remain the same;
the preservation of one's thoughts. Through the many
ways people express their ideas and thoughts, the perpetuation
of our way of life maintains a form of preservation.
Reflecting on this process Mitchell began looking at
the role language has on this process. Exploring variations
of communication Mitchell became drawn to the illustrative
elements found within the English language.
Mitchell's work for "Preserving" takes a
look at how symbols can be used to represent different
ideas. Incorporating talk bubbles found in comic strips,
the heavily illustrative qualities of the English language
gave way to form the compositions for his work. Departing
from Mitchell's usual method of operation, the colors
have become muted to allow for a break from the way
he had been painting for the last two years with vivid
hues and complimentary color compositions.
Mitchell’s background in art began at a very
young age. He discovered comic books, viewing them as
an inspirational reference coaxing him to draw things
in accordance to his own unique perspective. Since then
he has worked with sculptor Barrett DeBusk, attained
his BFA at Northern Arizona University and developed
his creative graphic art skills within the graphic design
industry. Ever changing and evolving Mitchell works
with media from paintbrush to computer.
