When an artist creates an artwork it
usually "Preserves" a moment in time, a concept,
or an emotion. The word "Preservation" has
different connotations for different people. Another
definition would be, preserving a way of life, which
has more of an abstract application compared to physically
preserving an object (fruit in jam). How might an artist
interpret preserve in their artwork? Does artwork fix
a thought in a period of time and space? How can something
be timeless?
The theme was given to the artists six
months ago and they were asked to create an artwork
based on the theme preserving. Some of the artists approached
it as "preserving the present". Others approached
the theme on a more physical, less abstract interpretation.
During the months of November you are
invited to view the results of the interpretation of
“Preserving” by local Portland artists to
internationally exposed artists. Among those participating
are Chris Johnson, L. Jason Mitchell, Helen Padilla,
Mø, and Alissa Clark.
